“How thick can I cut with your system?” is one of the most common questions we hear from metal fabricators shopping for CNC plasma cutting systems. This question can be somewhat misleading because it’s not the system as a whole that determines the thickness of the cut. It’s actually the plasma cutter, specifically the amperage of the plasma cutter, that determines how thick you can cut.
The infographic (below) shows the Thickness and Cut Speed of the Hypertherm Powermax 105 for mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The thickness and cut speed will also vary by changing the amperage setting of the plasma cutter. Our infographic shows how these measurements change at 105 amps, 85 amps, and 65 amps. (Note: Edge starts are required for thicker material that can not be pierced.)
