When we first walked in the doors, it was obvious that 911 Custom was a fast-paced, high-energy business. The phones were ringing off the hooks in the offices and the shop was bustling with technicians working on the customization of emergency vehicles. “The customers are police, fire, EMS, public works, and pretty much any emergency equipment operator,” 911 Custom owner, Jarod Busch, explains to us. “If you see flashing lights, it’s probably one of our customers.”
911 Custom is based in Overland Park, Kansas just south of Kansas City. Up until a few months ago, Jarod and his staff were outsourcing parts that required CNC cutting. This included brackets for lights, storage cabinets, and other custom interior and exterior options. They realized that outsourcing was hurting their profit margin and turnaround time. With not much CNC plasma cutting experience, it was important for Jarod to find a system that was easy to operate and provide high quality cutting results. After a substantial amount of research, they decided to go with a 4’x8′ EZ Cut CNC system and Powermax 85 plasma cutter.
Even though 911 Custom has only been using their CNC plasma table for a short period, they have already seen positive results. “It’s helped us up sell on a lot of vehicles,” Jarod tells us with a smile on his face. “If we can offer better bracketry at different angles now they’re not only buying a light bar, they’re buying more lights. Instead of just selling one product, I might sell seven.”
Another interesting conversation we had with Jarod was about Google SketchUp, which he uses for all of his CAD drawing. “Since we are a small business I can’t afford to hire a CAD designer,” he tells us. “It’s a really powerful tool. For what it does compared to the price of AutoCAD and some other software on the market, I was very amazed.” Google SketchUp is available as a free download as well as a Pro version. Jarod also explained what led him to choosing EZ Cut CNC. “I was down to two companies. The sealing deal was that EZ Cut CNC would come and install the table. But not only that, they would also train our guys for two or three days.”
This was very appealing to Jarod because most CNC plasma table manufacturers do not provide installation and training with the purchase of a system. More often than not, customers will have to set up the table themselves and training is usually at an additional expense or not an option at all. This is not the case with EZ Cut CNC, which provides a true turn-key CNC plasma cutting system.
