Do These 10 Things Before Your New Plasma Table Arrives

So you have ordered your new CNC plasma cutting system, you are excitedly anticipating the arrivl of your new investment and can’t wait to start cutting and enjoying all of the benefits of a CNC controlled plasma cutting system.  To properly prepare and plan for your new CNC plasma cutting system, we highly recommend that you do these 10 things before your plasma table even arrives.

  1. Table Layout
    • There are a variety of table sizes from which to choose.  The table size you choose will be heavily influenced by the type and size of the material you intend to cut.  But, it is important that you not forget one other critical factor – how much space you have in your al fabrication shop.  Ensure that you have adequate space for your plasma cutter as well as its components.
  2. Input Electrical Power
    • Depending on the type of plasma cutter that you select, your metal fabrication shop will need to be equipped with either single phase or three phase power.  Having the correct power supply is critically important for safety and for maximizing the life of your plasma cutting system.  Additionally, it is recommended that you have a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for the computer system.
  3. Grounding
    • Understanding your plasma cutter is an important part of owning your new plasma cutting system.  We recommend that clients consult the plasma manufacturer operating manual for specific grounding instructions because things like electrical noise, high frequency and other transit voltage could interfere with the CNC controller and cables which could lead to a system malfunction.
  4. Ventilation
    • If you have a water table you will not need to worry about ventilation because the water table takes care of it for you but if you have a down draft table you will need to ensure you have a proper exhaust fan for ventilation.  We recommend that customers buy an in-line turbine exhaust fan with a minimum 1750 cfm capacity.
  5. Compressed Air/Gas
    • The type of plasma cutter you have will influence what kind of compressed air and/or gas you need.  We recommend that clients use a desiccant air dryer to keep the air dry and an in-line oil and water filter as well.  Should your plasma cutter require gas, you need to also have high-pressure gas regulators and a gas hose.
  6. Plasma Torch Consumables
    • Though we provide customers with a limited amount of consumables upon purchase of their new CNC plasma cutting system, we recommend that clients purchase additional consumables from your local Hypertherm or Thermal Dynamics distributor to ensure that you have an adequate amount of consumables on hand for your cutting needs.
  7. Operator
    • Whether you plan to operate the CNC plasma cutting system, or you have an employee that will be operating it, it is important to establish who will be operating it so that you can ensure a minimum level of capability using a computer and mouse.  Additionally, we will provide on-site plasma training to ensure that the system operator feels comfortable operating a CNC plasma cutting machine.
  8. CAD Software
    • There are many kinds of CAD software, some free and some for a fee and we recommend that clients have DXF files of the parts they want to cut readily available so that they can begin cutting as soon as the system is set up.
  9. Material for Cutting
    • Carefully determine what type of metals you intend to cut and how thickness that material will be so that you can order adequate quantities of metal sheets for your new plasma cutting system.
  10. Plan for Profit
    • You have done your research and realized that investing in a CNC plasma cutting system can improve efficiency and help you boost production which will lead to increased profit.  Anticipate how you will make money with your new system and how to maximize its advantages for profit.
